Visit of the Mining Museum in Saint-Etienne
An emblematic site of the city of Saint-Etienne, the mining museum evokes the adventure of an entire region around coal. Closed in 1973, Couriot is no ordinary mine shaft. Until the nationalization of the mines in 1946, it was the main well of the Société anonyme des mines de la Loire (42), one of the largest French companies, and the largest well in the coal basin of Saint-Etienne. Take a free tour of the museum rooms or take a guided tour in the footsteps of miners. You will then descend into a reconstructed mine using an elevator that simulates the descent from 700 m deep. Emotions guaranteed!
