Autour de Grangent

A transit area for millennia, the Gorges de Loire located to the south of St Just St Rambert are dotted with remarkable sites... preferably discovered on foot. Since medieval times, lords and monks have built castles and churches there.
– the medieval village of Chambles, overlooking the Gorges de Loire, whose origins date back to the 11th century) offers an exceptional panorama from the top of its keep.
– Essalois Castle (free access every day from 10 a.m. to 19 p.m.)
With its heavy stone shell, it acts as a lookout. The result of several successive constructions (12th, 16th, 19th and 20th centuries), it is an open place where you can go back in time. From its roof terrace or the top of its tower, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Loire gorges and beyond over the whole of Forez.
– The Romanesque chapel of Ste Foy du Châtelet, built in the 11th century on a long rocky tongue which advances towards the village of St Victor, belonged to a priory founded by monks from the Abbey of Conques.
To access the site, you will have to descend a stony path from Chambles.
